Fish and Fresh Air

Do fish know when the wind blows? Maybe the breeze is too high up above the water to make waves. Or the depth of marine life may be down so far that even sunlight doesn’t penetrate. The midnight zone. Currents there are mild, almost stagnant. Sharks and angel fish stay away from those depths. Sometimes automated machines travel very low and observe bottom dwellers, but they are careful not to shine too much light on the delicate creatures who live there. Even the ripples of humming submersible engines can upset the silent ecosystem. Some of the living things in the deep are unrecognizable and surely they don’t know us. Even though life in the shadows is mysterious and beyond our sight, we must live in a way that cherishes and preserves all creatures, not only the ones we know and recognize.
